The consulting cycle: The Truth

The Consulting cycle: The Truth

IS THIS YOU?

You need a consultant, so you do a search and find a large reputable company to help you.

You have a small budget to work with: made smaller by the pandemic.

You tell the consulting company that this is all you have to spend.
You still want a competent qualified consultant though.

You check the box. You’re happy. Your boss is happy, and you have visions of your problems being over.

THIS IS WHAT HAPPENS ON THE CONSULTING SIDE

The large consulting company has large overhead: larger with the pandemic. It still needs to make the same amount of money and more in order to keep its doors open.

Consequently, the contractor that it uses must be paid less thanks to the smaller budget offered by the client.

The Consulting company needs to find a qualified and competent contractor to meet the client’s need but now they are forced to pay junior/intern rates.

The Qualified/Experienced contractors disappear so the Consulting Company crosses their fingers and sends the client a lesser qualified and lesser experienced contractor hoping that they work out.

THIS IS WHAT HAPPENS AT THE CLIENT

1.      The Client doesn’t accept the contractor as their CV is weak. So, the Contracting Company keeps looking and keeps advertising and spends more money to attract the right talent at a lower rate. This causes a loss of confidence by the client who ultimately finds another Consulting firm to work for them. The scenario above repeats itself. FYI. There are some contractor positions on Linked in which have been advertised by different firms for a number of months now.

2.      MAYBE The client accepts the lesser qualified contractor and has to reduce its expectations and/or train/mentor the contractor like they just hired their own employee. This again sullies the reputation of the consulting firm as the client was looking for someone who could “hit the ground running”

3.      OR The client might try it out and take on the contractor and subsequently be forced to fire the contractor due to their incompetence asking for someone new or going to another consulting firm for help.

This is a sorry waste of client and Consulting firm resources.

HERE’s an IDEA.

Hire a smaller firm with low overhead which only attracts and uses seasoned/qualified individuals who can work with the smaller budget offered by clients.

What’s the difference?

Our organization can attract and retain qualified people because we believe in ensuring that the higher rates are paid to the contractor as we don’t have huge overheads to deal with.
